UpdateIn business since end of 2007, VirWox is today the the leading independent exchange for trading virtual currencies, both in terms number of users (about 100,000), and trading volume (2012: 29 million Euro / 38 million US$).
Currencies traded are Linden Dollars (the virtual currency used in Second Life), Avination's C$, and the Open Metaverse Currency (OMC). In April 2011, RED PAY LINE started accepting Bitcoin and enabled to trade bitcoins for Linden Dollars (both ways), which are in turn convertible to EUR, USD, GBP, CHF, and the other virtual currencies traded on VirWoX.
Other payment methods (deposit and withdrawal) include PayPal, Credit/Debit Cards via Skrill/Moneybookers, NETELLER, paysafecard, Ukash, SOFORTbanking, and bank transfers.
VirWox is run by the company Virtual World Services GmbH, which is located in Austria. The service is available in five languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian).

For a test, I bought 20 EUR worth of SLL on virwox using Paypal and exchanged them for Bitcoins by following one of the many tutorials that are out there on the web. I had to give them my real name so they could match it to my Paypal account - this is important, don't use a fake name or it will almost definitely not work. Because I was a new user, I had to wait two days for the payment to be processed, but finally the money minus all fees arrived in my Bitcoin wallet.The total fees are extraordinarily high, and of the 20 EUR that I put in, I got just 13 EUR worth of BTC out. But the website is transparent about all of them, so this didn't come as a surprise. Think about it: Your money goes from Paypal to virwox balance to SLL to BTC-on-your-account to actual BTC and there are fixed fees coming from virwox at every step, as well as exchange fees from sellers when you buy the SLL and the BTC. The percentage you have to spent on fees might go down if you send larger sums of money, but they would still be much higher than when using other methods of buying BTC. The only thing that virwox is good for is when you want to buy a small amount of BTC via Paypal very fast and don't care about incurring heavy losses.
On the whole the website gets 5 stars because (at least in my case) it isn't a scam and does what you expect it to do (allow you to buy BTC via Paypal). The total fees are super high, but the website tells you the fees at every step and you should know what's coming, so I won't subtract any stars for that.

Hello.One star is actually one too much. Virwox isn't a scam page but it's as close as possible to it. Beside the hilarious provision I lost about 200€ thanks to this page. They just disabled my both accounts during one week while there been money in charge. No anwser on the two EMails I wrote to them in response. Not even a mail when and why they banned my accounts.
Probably this is a way to let people know you can't trust this platform at all. If you want to use it, just try to throw your money out of your window, it will be equal to using Virwox and you won't support some kind of criminal company with it.
I also hope to reach Virwox via this, so they give me the anwser their customers deserve. After some research I found I'm far not the only one.

after a while back and forth and quite some Cash they took for every Exchange, Payout etc.
they're not going to Pay it out before at least 48 hours.
so actually you're not getting anything but transaction charges.

They deleted my account of $99 USD without even telling me (email or other communication). Then after multiple password recoveries with failed login I email them days later and they say my account was deleted die ot "high risk indication". I then have to ask them to refund me. You would have thought they would have refunded me anyway without me contacting them given they have no proof of my wrongdoing. Do yourself a favor and go to another exchange.

@Billy Jones, virwox took 0.005 btc for withdrawal fees regardless the amount you purchased/exchanged. Its a great place to buy bitcoin safely using cc/paypal, although the fees are considerably high, still worth it imo

Seems like a scam. I signed up today.. as I needed money from paypal sent to skrill.. and made a transfer.. and lost $6 in the transfer as it was in wrong currency and had to exchange backl and forth between SLL or whatever.. but the foirst transfer went through fine.. then I made a second transfer and I had not recieved anything and my money is gone. These should be instant transfers. as the first one went through fine... I wonder what happened to my seconfd transfer? What a disaster.. I really needed these services right now.. and my money just dissapeared. I have no idea what is up with this VirWox.. but it seems like a serious scam. I am not happy at all for even trying it. STAY AWAY FROM VOIRWOX! SCAM!

same to me I registred last night and deposited 40 $ little amount for test . I exchange 20 $ to bitcoin and nothing The bitcoin get canceled and back on my virwox balance then I wanted to withdrawal money back to my credit card but nothing all time cancel . cancel on skrill cancel on paypal and cancel to bank account just theres no way to withdrawal money back and I try that with same account information and same credit card that I deposited. They mail me that they cant accept withdrawal becos money laundering and thats all all time auto message no support no explain why what to do .... Bitnovo guys

Oh sorry forget admin, have to add these for Virwox also:- Always register your Virwox account with the same PayPal/Skrill email if you wish to pay using your PayPal/Skrill accounts, otherwise your order can be flagged!
- Always use 100% same legal identity/name on your Virwox account with your payment method (i.e never use such "nickname" etc), remember it can't be changed once you have setup your account!
- Always attempt to withdraw your Bitcoin to your wallet or funds for your payout quickly ASAP after exchange! Again never leave your funds/Bitcoin there! Virwox is neither bank nor online wallet! Don't risk yourself and them!

HOW TO GET YOUR VIRWOX ACCOUNT NEVER DISABLED / WITH SUCCESSFUL ORDERS:(Actually Virwox is 100% legitimate and trusted site, although sometimes they are just too "paranoid"...)
1. Do not ever use Tor/Proxy (dynamic IP doesnt matter, as long as the same country)
2. Do not ever use disposable emails, use your regular email instead (for your security and theirs)
3. After email registration, don't forget to change your temporary password quickly
4. Use your own legal payment and true identity of course lol, be a good guy!
5. It's recommended to always use single payment method only (i.e choose either same credit card or PayPal, not both), otherwise your order can be automatically flagged by their system (not sure with other/"safer" payment forms i.e. bank transfer)
6. If you use credit/debit cards (processed by Skrill), it's better to make sure 3dsecure/VBV feature enabled, otherwise transaction may or may not be going successfully (depends on the issuer), prepaid/virtual cards may not work, local bank cards are the best.
7. If you use PayPal make sure it's already verified, at least it has one credit card/bank account attached also, then you can still pay with the available funds though

I still got my second btc withdrawal pending/on hold for about 24-48 hours. I thought only the first one should be (for security reason). Wasting time, i need my btc for my business asap i will may consider using their service again in the future. I got scammed by WirWoX and i am going to tell you how it happend.I bought a 10 euro paysafecard and transfered this to WirVox. I found out they take 20% of your money and put it in their own wallet. then i couldn't buy bitcoins because the minimum amount is 0,020 bitcoins and i could only buy 0,18 (because i they took 2 euro, 20%). then I decided to put another 10 euro on the account and then I got everything of it onto my bitcoin wallet.
so it was like this
20 euro paysafe > (9,45 euro) 0,020 bitcoins and i only received 0,019 because of the transaction costs. my bitcoin wallet says it is worth 7.45$ which is around 5/6 euros.
Thanks WirVox, you received an award for being a total scammer.

Yesterday i found both of my email hacked/deleted and virwox account disabled. Kinda frustrating, don't know who did it and why. Still thank god no bitcoin/deposit lost (already withdrawed). Maybe coincident? Need to create new one.

I wish I had read these reviews first.They accepted three 88USD Skrill transactions from me (264USD) which came out to a little over 0.53 BTC...which is less than 215USD. That is correct. In all, their fees cost 18.5%...reprehensible.
I then attempted to send the BTCs to a wallet. I was told it would take "a manual step" and would require 48 hours. Almost exactly 48 hours later my account was locked, the bitcoins never reached my wallet, and I received an email from Skrill/Virwox explaining that 264USD would be refunded due to my account being "a security risk." No further explanation was given.
I'm told it will take 21 days for the refund to process. How very handy for them. On one hand, I am grateful I will get the full amount back... if that is indeed what happens. On the other hand, I can see how this whole system plays into their Second Life Linden dollars crap, and holding onto my money definitely works for them. God knows what other financially-rewarding self-serving purposes their phony transactions generate...... This is a scam, it is fraud, it is disgusting. So what if I get my money back? I still lose dollars in the ultimate exchange rate (both ways), and I have been misled into using their service and thereby allowed their hideous backroom tactics to continue. For shame. I feel like an idiot.
To be honest, the fact their site looks like pure crap, together with the trifling btc volumes traded there, did warn me something was amiss. Trust your intuition.
Do not acquire bitcoins from these folk, they will only waste your time and money.

Total scam. Funded with PayPal, $55USD. Waited 3 days before contacting customer support to ask about withdraw taking so long, was told too much high risk and disabled account. Was later told refund will happen, now because i converted to BTC, i lost most of the $55USD to there high fees, so now its a PayPal dispute which i had to start the process due to waiting 21 days for there supposed 'refund' TOTAL SCAM*DON'T FALL FOR IT*PAYPAL AND BITCOINS ARE NEVER HAND IN HAND (EVEN CHANGING TO SLL ETC), NO MATTER WHO SAYS THEY ARE***VIRWOX ARE SCUM & SCAM**
